The origin of the “V” sign as something offensive supposedly goes back to the middle ages. Archers weren’t worth enough to be ransomed, so if they were captured, rather than kill them, their index and middle fingers were cut off. Displaying the two fingers became a sign of defiance. *According to a follower who happens to be Greek, apparently #4 on here is incorrect.
